Luxembourg posted a trade deficit of EUR 0.59 billion in January 2026, slightly higher than the EUR 0.55 billion shortfall recorded in the same month a year earlier. Imports grew by 2.6% year-on-year to EUR 1.83 billion, driven by increased purchases of machinery and equipment (26.7%), transport equipment (7.0%), chemicals and chemical products (4.7%), and food and live animals (3.7%). The bulk of these imports originated from Japan and other Asian countries.

Meanwhile, exports rose by a modest 0.6% year-on-year to EUR 1.24 billion, supported by higher shipments of machinery and equipment (0.8%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (53.4%), food and live animals (1.2%), and beverages and tobacco (8.1%). Export growth was strongest towards Germany, France, and various Asian markets.
