New Zealand’s 10-year government bond yield climbed to an intraday high of 5.11% in late September, the highest level since November 2023, mirroring a global bond selloff as elevated oil prices reignited inflation concerns. The deepening rout in sovereign debt pushed US Treasury yields to multi-year highs, prompting markets to further price in a “higher-for-longer” interest rate path from the Federal Reserve. Rising global yields, in turn, intensified upward pressure on New Zealand’s long-term borrowing costs, reinforced by mounting expectations of additional tightening by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Markets are now assigning roughly a 75% probability to a third rate hike in October, a sharp increase from earlier in the month. This shift follows Governor Anna Breman’s warning that persistently high oil prices could drive near-term inflation above the central bank’s latest projections. At the same time, her emphasis on an uneven economic recovery underscored the policy dilemma of containing inflation risks while supporting still-fragile domestic growth.
